when i first trained, i was taught what most of us practiced at the time~"Digital" strokes
Clean. Structured. Uniform. Although they were technically correct, they didn’t feel real to me. They looked like patterns placed into the skin, not hair growing from it.
So I went back to the fundementals...
For years, I struggled to create the kind of strokes I envisioned. Strokes that mimicked the natural irregularity of real hair. The subtle taper. The way density shifts. The way light catches at different angles. I realised that what I was chasing wasn’t just better technique, it was realism. And realism required more than copying a pattern.
I studied hair growth patterns, light directions, negative space, weight distribution and visual flow. I applied artistic principles such as contrast, rhythm, asymmetry and layering to break away from the digital look. Artistry wasn’t enough alone. I needed structure!
Once I had a foundation, creativity became effortless because I wasn’t guessing anymore. I was building from structure.
